I think freedom of sexuality is something that we all need and very few of us have

I think sexual pleasure is a legitimate thing to want and ethically pursue

I do not judge people for the (consensual) sex that they have or want

I will not tolerate slut-shaming

I will not tolerate hatred of people based on gender or orientation (including asexual)

I will not tolerate hatred of sex workers

I believe comprehensive, honest, non-judgmental sex education is necessary for public health and happiness

I think understanding of sexual consent—what it is, why it matters—is sorely lacking in society and crucially important

I reject preconceptions of what kind of sexuality a person should have, whether these preconceptions are based on gender, age, culture, disability, survivor status, or basically anything else

I value people’s individual freedom of choice in determining their sex lives (including the choices not to have sex)

What I Don’t Mean

Everyone should have sex

Everyone should have kinky, non-monogamous, exhibitionistic, pansexual sex

Accepting someone’s sexuality means you have to participate in it, watch them engage in it, or hear about it in detail

Nothing related to sex is ever hurtful for anyone

Feminism should be all about sex

Sex fixes everything

Not a question, just a little story. In my Modern American history class the other day, we were discussing whether or not we might have a women president one day. One person said, "I wouldn't feel safe. Men were made to be leaders," and another said, "She'd have PMS and declare war." Both of these commenters were female.

Those are the oldest comments in the book against female leadership. The PMS one has always *really* bothered me because (it’s HORRIBLY sexist but also because) every person who menstruates experiences it differently. Some people don’t have PMS related mood swings at all. And even if it were true that everyone did (which it’s not!) the age of most presidents indicate that we’d likely have a post-menopausal first female president. And even women who DO have PMS related mood swings still have a logical brain which says, “don’t declare war over this.”

Ugh.

Internalized misogyny can run so deep.

I do worry about how the first female president will face so much scrutiny and how she’ll be used as the standard in the future. (Just like Obama w/ black male candidates to come.) When a white dude leads he’s seen as an individual but women and POCs are seen as representatives of whole groups. Quite unfair.

Stupid question... But what does MRA stand for?

I’m fine. You just have to understand, as a fat person, body acceptance advocate, and intersectional feminist, I take it very seriously when someone accuses me of being as bad as “chauvinists” (your original ask) or shaming …for simply asking that the media embrace female body diversity.

I’ve posted not great stuff before. I’ve made mistakes (of course), had regrets about content, and I’ve taken stuff down. But that is not that case here and I (clearly) feel passionately about this.

Don't get me wrong! I agree that mainstream media is a culprit! You get greater diversity of women in porn, which I think is fantastic. Maybe I'm not expressing myself quite right, because I'm tired. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything knowing this. But I dunno, I think cartoon women have started to become more of their own people, and that's a step, even if they do have a skinny/curvy shape. My cousin loves Barbie, the skinniest, curviest of them all, but she wants to be an elephant.

How did I ever shame *anyone*?

I’m sorry, I’m trying to stay civil, but I am so so so so tired of fighting this same fight *within* feminist circles…asking that ALL bodies be valued and represented is NOT shaming thin bodies. At all.

Just like being pro-woman doesn’t mean anti-man.

Honestly, I’m tired of this.

To change the views of men we must first change the views of women. Shaming chauvinists won't work until the majority of women are prepared to back the cause. Nothing will change until women like my mother can see that they are beautiful. It's why, while I appreciate your message, I kind of disagree with how you go about it.
